Slightly Nasty Modules

These just arrived in the mail from Australia. Three Slightly Nasty DIY module panels and PCBs! These begin my 4U Loudest Warning format modular project. They’ll be going into this new rack, right below the Dual Benjolin.

Slightly Nasty modules are designed for DIY only by Raynor Pettge. He lists his design principles as:

  • 4U / banana format with individual modules.
  • Use only modern, jellybean components wherever possible.
  • Avoid complicated calibration or trimming.
  • Use modern construction – stacked boards, PCB-mounted controls etc.
  • NO PANEL WIRING!
  • Compatibility with Eurorack signal levels / impedance etc.
  • Consistency between modules in both look & feel, and operation.
  • Good documentation that targets non-expert builders.
  • Should be able to completely build and calibrate a module in a day.

And I’ll add that full schematics and circuit explanations are freely downloadable.

Parts Sourcing

The builder must buy all of the parts. Bills of Material (BOMs) are provided, and most of the parts are commonly available. The user manual/build document contains additional information about particular parts. Unfortunately though, some specific parts have to be guessed at, such as a few switches and LEDs. In my build posts for these modules, I’ll include particular Mouser/Mfr part numbers that I used.

Pictures!

I took photos of the panels and one side of each PCB. The white panels are absolutely gorgeous, painted on both sides. The PCBs are very sturdy looking and easy to build on. The completed module front shots are from the Slightly Nasty website; I’m going to change some of the jack and knob colors to match the Bugbrand theme I’ve used for the Benjolin and for my CGS Serge blue panels. They won’t match Raynor’s beautiful red, white, and blue aesthetic. I hope you don’t mind, Raynor!

Model 1011 Discrete Oscillator

Module picture from website is above. Here are my photos of the bare panel and PCBs.

The main and panel PCB come joined together.

Model 2231 Asymmetric Slew Limiter

The ASL is Raynor’s take on the Serge DUSG; it is not a clone!

The panels are actually whiter than my photos came out.

Two sets of the ASL PCBs below are needed. One set is pictured below.

Model 2251 Multiband Filter + VCA

The filter also has a basic VCA included, as a separate module.

I won’t need to use IC sockets with these very sturdy PCBs.

One Response to Slightly Nasty Modules

  1. Richard says:

C&K On-On-On DPDT switch, 7211SYCQE, Mouser part # 611-7211-002 ($12 each) fits the PC board for the Slew Limiter. Find the same at Digikey for around $10.
