Logistic Map Chaotic CV Patch

Generic Patch Diagram for the Logistic Map Patch

I got this patch from a ModWiggler forum thread called Patching Chaotic CV from basic modules. It’s on page 1, from user Pelsea, and refers to this Doepfer patch page, the Chaos Patch. I don’t understand how it works. My patch was instantiated using a Tromsø for the clocked S&H, just the VCA part of Qu-Bit Cascade for the first VCA, one section of a 3XMIA for the inverting and mixing, half of a 2hp Dual VCA for the second VCA, and finally a SSF MIXMODE for the final Mix to get 4X gain.

All of the above is to create a chaotic (as opposed to random) pitch step sequence. I did not apply a CV to the second VCA, as shown above in the Logistic Map Patch. I just manually tweaked the 2hp VCA. The patch is very sensitive to the level. It worked with full unity gain, but also with slightly less than unity gain. I tried bypassing this VCA, but then it didn’t work.

The output of the S&H was used as a pitch control for a sinewave oscillator. On each clock an envelope generator was triggered to control another VCA to make notes. I passed this signal to different effects. In the following, it’s the pitch steps that are of interest. They’re not random.

Through the Holocene Nonlinear Memory Machine
Through the Noise Engineering Desmodus Versio Reverb
Through the Smoothie Audio SMEAR
Through the Desmodus and then through the SMEAR

After playing around with various modules to implement this patch, all I’ve been able to get is fairly regular repeating stair steps. So I am moving on to other ideas.
