The Dual Benjolin is finished, racked and patched. I rearranged the rack cases in my studio to accommodate the Benjolin, as well as to plan ahead for the upcoming 4U modular rack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was the first time in a while since I had wired a large panel. It did turn out to be quite time consuming. I used up most of the fancy wire I use just for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rack case now holding the Benjolin had been full of MOTM modules. All of those MOTM now live together with other MOTM in another rack. I’ve left 4U of height in this 19 inch rack for a 17 space 4U modular system. 4U Serge format modules use +\/-12 volt power supplies, while MOTM uses +\/-15V. The supply in the box is a Power One unit that I converted to +\/-12V. A nice feature of the Dual Benjolin panel is that it can run on either fifteen or twelve volt supplies, due to its internal down-regulation to +\/-9 volts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This patch is pretty straight-forward. I used the two Oscillators on the left as LFOs to drive the clock and data inputs of the first Rungler. The second Rungler takes the same clock pulse, but takes its data from Q8, the MSB output of the first Rungler. The right two Oscillators are running at audio rate and each take frequency CV from a different Rungler out. Then the Oscillator pulse outs or the coupler (PWM) output goes over to the two filters. I patched the same CV to each filter that is controlling the frequency of the corresponding Oscillator, so there is tracking of a sort. There is no 1V\/Octave in this rack, baby!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can never have enough LFOs. I took two of the Quantisise oscillators (each modulating the other as well) to sweep the filters. The only other use of Quantisise is for mixing and sending the output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This whole system, Benjolins plus Quantisise, almost makes a complete synthesizer. Though Benjolin has no VCAs or Envelope generators, Quantisise has six linear VCAs, two CGS tube VCAs, and a ring modulator. Still lacking is any kind of Envelope generator, but the 4U system is planned to have four EGs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
