Here is Doppio from ThreeTom Modular. Doppio is a compact stereo amplifier, drive, and soft limiter module, stereo in and out with manual controls. I built it from a Thonk full kit.
Assembly
This is an easy full kit. The assembly instructions are very detailed. The only change I made was to substitute a shrouded header for the 10-pin power. The module is well designed with two PCBs joined by small headers. There is an additional back panel to protect the rear PCB, with a hole to display the serial number.
The PCBs are joined by three headers and secured by two standoffs.
The six LEDs are surface mounted on the front PCB, with a light guard separating each of them into its own little compartment.
The height of all the panel facing parts is exactly matched.
Even with three layers behind the panel, Doppio is not a deep module, only 25mm.
Calibration is quite simple, too. It’s fully explained in the build guide.
Using Doppio is Easy
The user manual is very detailed and worth reading if you are planning to buy. Doppio offers three different gain settings (x1, x5, x21), and three different ratios (linear, drive, and limit). In addition to this, Doppio has gain and volume knobs for more precise control.
I found it easy to dial in just the right amount of distortion, or none. Hot signals can be reigned in and low signals can be amplified. Distortion control is separate from final output volume. You could easily put this at the end of your stereo signal chain. That’s where my Doppio will be patched, most of the time.
