Polyglot Patch Cords

The MOTM Modular is 5U with 1/4-inch phone jacks for patching. The Cocoquantus has screw heads for alligator clip patching. For patching between these I have made up some simple 1/4-inch phone plug to alligator clip cords. A Plumbutter will arrive and it has banana jacks. To patch between all these formats, I came up with a way to adapt banana patch cords to both phone plugs and to alligator clips.

For banana to phone plug I devised this adapter, which is made from a Radio Shack phone plug and a Johnson banana jack. The idea is to tap out the plastic housing and screw in the banana jack. Luckily, I had a 5/16 tap that worked perfectly to thread the housing.

The wire should be very flexible, because it gets twisted around when the housing is screwed onto the phone plug. A wire length of 2 inches works fine.
Notice that the ground stem for the jack is broken off. It serves no purpose and would obstruct the banana jack.

Here is the adapter, working with a nice Pomona banana patch cord.

Finally there is the banana to alligator adapter. Very simple, it uses an alligator clip designed to accept a banana plug.
